How to Overcome Shame

Anyone fighting the spirit of shame can also feel humiliated by it. Shame causes a frozen reaction that makes the individual go into hiding when confronted.

Here are some of the ways to overcome shame

  • Stop taking all the blame

It takes two to tangle. Stop taking all the blame on yourself. Re-visit the issue that led to that shame. Take a journal and write everything you remember, and try to single out whatever triggers that feeling of shame in you.

  • Step into the light of God

Jesus told us in Matthew 11:28-30, come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Stepping into the light of God will take away the burden of shame and humiliation from you. David committed adultery and murder. He was ashamed of his deed and called on God for help.

  • Allow God’s grace to work for you

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness, says the Lord. Know that you can’t do it on your own allow your weakness to rest on Him. Despite the shame, insult, and humiliation. God will lift you above them all. When you are weak, God will stand by you, giving you the strength to carry on.

  • Practice self-love

When you feel ashamed of yourself and whatever has happened in your life, it might become hard to love yourself. But it will be better to re-parent yourself. Cherish that person in you. Value yourself. Continue to work diligently toward your happiness, and gradually that thought of shame and self-sabotage will slowly disappear.

  • Correct your toxic self-talk and false beliefs

When you discover self-defeating thoughts arising within you, take a moment to reflect on what you are thinking and how it’s affecting your life. Step into the word of God and allow it to redirect your path. Choose your friends wisely. Stop allowing shame to take away the better part of you. If necessary, seek help. Look for a mentor that can help you out of that shame.
